Great Companies with Modest Beginnings

1. Apple Computer Company

Today, the Apple Computer Company is one of the most successful manufacturers of technology-focused products in the world, but its first computers were assembled in a small garage in Cupertino, CA. The home belonged to Steve Jobs’ parents. The first of the famous Apple computers was made by Steve Wozniak who would later partner with Jobs and Ronald Wayne to officially launch the company. The birthplace of the Apple Computer is now listed as a historic property.

2. Mattel

At some point in your childhood, it’s extremely likely that you played with a Mattel toy. Long before Mattel become a household name, Harold Matson, along with Ruth and Elliot Handler, were constructing picture frames in a California garage. From the leftover scraps of material, Elliot began making dollhouse furniture. After their products became a hit at a local retail store, Elliot and Ruth focused exclusively on producing toys. In 1959, the first Mattel Barbie doll was invented by Ruth and named after her daughter Barbara.

3. Barnes & Noble

Once the vice president of a Wall Street investment firm, Jeff Bezos abandoned his job and focused on what he believed was an incredible opportunity to sell books online. He set up shop in his Washington garage but held meetings at a local Barnes & Noble store, which would become the place where his first contracts were signed. In 1995, he launched, which is now the largest online retailer in the world.

4. Disney

In 1923, a one-car garage became a makeshift studio for animators Walt and Roy Disney. In the tiny space, they filmed the Alice Comedies, an early work that would ignite a passion for animation and a creative fire that eventually became the highest-grossing media enterprise in the world.

5. The Yankee Candle Company

In 1969, a 16-year-old boy named Michael Kittredge created a scented candle in the family garage. It was a gift for his mother. His creation was made from melted crayons. Friends and neighbors soon took notice of the candle’s quality and requested their own, so Michael started selling them. When his business outgrew the garage, he moved production to an old mill. The Yankee Candle Company is now the nation’s largest manufacturer of premium scented candles.
